Young friends and siblings always bounce on the bed and push
each other around. It is something that everyone does in their childhood. But
one push too hard, or a slip of the feet and someone could get hurt. Something as
mundane as bouncing on the bed doesn’t seem like it could lead to a serious
accident. However, on Sunday afternoon, a six-year-old girl was bouncing on the
bed with her siblings. They had the window open to enjoy the fresh air. The
girl lost her balance, and the next thing her siblings knew she fell through
the window. They were in an apartment on the third floor, so she had fallen
about forty or fifty feet. The child was rushed to Scottish Rite Hospital where
she was treated for fairly minor injuries. This girl was extremely lucky as she
could have broken both her legs, or even broken her neck and died.
Parents need to be extremely cautious of their children’s surroundings.
Of course accidents happen and there is nothing that can be done about that,
but if someone had been a little more aware, this accident may not have occurred.
This is an important lesson to learn because serious things can occur from
small everyday activities. As a babysitter, I am now aware that I need to be
extra careful and expect that anything could happen. Applying a few small
safety concerns, can go a long way when a child’s life is at hand. Whether it’s
closing a window, or turning off the oven, these small actions can lead to the
greater safety and well-being of children.
