Mormons

My name is Kaitlyn Dugan and I am a Mormon! Last year the Mormon ads, displaying average Mormons and their beliefs, brought some attention to the church through our website mormon.org. Although even more recently the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, most commonly known as the “Mormon” church, has experienced a massive amount of spotlight. One of its members, Mitt Romney, campaigned for a crucial presidency in our nation causing American citizens to question, could America handle a Mormon president? Many people stereotype Mormons as harshly strict and very strange; many question our Christian church to be a “colt”. Though these stereotypes are not true, some citizens were hesitant and questioned whether Romney should be the president simply because he is a Mormon. The Mormon Church always remains neutral during these political elections, telling its members to “pray for an answer as to who you should vote for”, yet some people seem to think that members of our church voted for Governor Romney based on his religion rather than his political views. This simply is not true.
Although some people were hesitant about a LDS president, other took the initiative to research about what our church believes; this helped to make people more aware of what our church actually believes. There are so many false accusations about our church, leaving the LDS church with a bad reputation. Many false rumors such as: us not being Christians, us being a colt, us worshipping Joseph Smith, us practicing polygamy, or us being brain washed into believing our gospel, leave people scared of our church.
Our ancestors were tarred and feathered, told to move across the Great Plains, mocked, and sacrificed for our beliefs. In 1838 there was even a Mormon Extermination Order, in the state of Missouri ordered by Lilburn Boggs, making it legal to kill a member of the Mormon Church; although there was not a massive amount of people killed the law was still outrageous. The law was rescinded just 36 years ago. Luckily today Mormons only have to face mocking through things like the broadway show the Book of Mormon or misinformed people who don’t agree with our beliefs. Although Governor Romney did not lose because he was a Mormon, he was mocked and unfortunately lost some voters because of his religion.
