Every year thousands of children run from door to door robbing neighbors of candy, all while dressed up in disguising costumes. The joy that comes along with this traditional activity is brought up by the thought of enough sugary sweets to last a whole year. Halloween is a "holiday" that allows little kids to pretend to be anything they can imagine, as long as they can make a costume out of it. So why, out of all this fun, do people expect teenagers to stay at home and forsake the merriment only to toddlers and tweens?
This Halloween i decided to make a trip to a few of the surrounding houses near me. I was disappointed in the surprisingly unanimous smirks and grimaces from the parents as i held out my pillow case. Most of these parents were not quick to hide their rude remarks as they asked me if i was too old to be trick or treating. I could not believe that i was being deprived of some of my favorite child hood memories as i was not welcome to join the other children in dressing up and collecting candy. Why is it that parents do not approve of kids participating in Halloween once they are older, and what age is the cut off?
I decided to eventually make my way back home with my pillow case feeling greatly oversized compared to the lacking amount of candy that was inside. This year's Halloween has taught me that i am no longer allowed to be a part of the holiday. I guess this is just another way of helping me realize that i am no longer a child, and will at some point in my life be trick or treating once again with a child of my own.
