There are many different types of cars
used for racing. The main types of cars used nowadays are funny car, pro-stock,
top-fuel, and stock car racing. Each of these different types of cars has a
different effect on the type of racing they perform for. They were also
invented by someone or an organization. This paper is mainly going to focus on
the person or organization, rather than the cars themselves.
The first type of racing is “Funny Car
Racing”. This type of racing involves a forward mounted engine and a carbon
fiber automotive body. This gives the appearance as showroom models’. The Dodge
Charger, Chevrolet Impala, Ford Mustang, and Toyota Solara are common models
used in the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA). There are some strict engine
related guidelines that need to be followed in order to race. The engine for a
funny car can only be a V-8 displaying only 500 cubic inches, and there can
only be two valves per cylinder. There are also some safety regulations that
need to be followed. There must be twin parachutes attached to the back of the
car, to help decelerate and stabilize the car after crossing the finish line. In 1965, Dick Landy, moved the front
axel forward 15 inches and the rear axel 10 inches forward. This allowed the
car to go 140 mph in 9 seconds.
