Free speech

Freedom of Speech is one of the basic rights granted to us. However, there always has been questions on to what extent should this be interpreted as. There are some restrictions, but the overall principle of the right is preserved.

The right to speak completely freely is restricted at an airport or a school. In a airport, for safety concerns, words that has a threatening connotation such as bombs or terrorists are banned. In a school, words that are offensive to others are banned. In these cases, the restrictions are perfectly acceptable, but when does this cross the line? Or, rather when are these rights abused?

There has been a local case where the issue of how much freedom of speech should be granted is raised. James Edward Avery is being sued for displaying accusatory signs towards everyone. Vice President Dick Cheney and “Hitlery” Clinton were of the few offensive signs posted by Avery.

Avery claims his behavior was perfectly acceptable because he had his freedom of speech. So this comes back to the question: how far should the freedom of speech be tolerated?

I, being an rebellious teen, am more inclined towards a true freedom of speech, but in this I case I feel like it is too much. I think that the right to free speech should be preserved at all cost except when it causes harm. Avery’s sign gave the neighborhood and the area a bad reputation so he should be punished. We wouldn’t want anyone from the school posting derogatory remarks around the school vicinity.
