Starbucks begins serving beer and wine

All of us are familiar with the pleasant aromas and calming atmosphere of the popular coffee shop: Starbucks coffee. Starbucks is known for their pumpkin spice lattes that greet fall and the red cups that are pleasantly welcomed back at the start of winter. But, soon, Starbucks will be known for much more than their coffee.

In 2011, Starbucks began the transformation to end their coffee shop stereotype. The company looked far and wide to transform their reputation, and began with, just that—their image. Some may recall the logo transformation of 2011 when Starbucks discarded the words “Starbucks Coffee” from their logo and enlarged the image of the mermaid. The logo was not the only thing to change in 2011, Starbucks also began widening their menu to include light lunch meals that are available for purchase at the counter.

A new, and surprising, choice is being added to the Starbucks menu. In 2012, Starbucks began adding wine and beer to their menu. Along with beer and wine, Starbucks will begin serving finger foods such as, rosemary cashews or blue brie cheese with walnut cranberry bread. Although it is hard to imagine a coffee-house serving blue brie cheese, it is happening in Johns Creek.

On October 19th, the Starbucks on Mansell Road became the first Starbucks to include alcohol in their menu. The Starbucks on the corner of State Bridge and Medlock Bridge recently remodeled to add their bar, this Starbucks begins serving beer and wine soon.

As the officers at Starbucks had hoped, the addition of alcohol to the Starbucks on Mansell Road received positive feedback. One man stated that he believed it created a comfortable environment for people to be able to order alcohol if they wanted, but that people who don't drink wouldn't feel uncomfortable not having an alcoholic drink because they could order a coffee.

While some welcome the new changes, others feel it is unnecessary. Students who study at the Starbucks on Medlock and State Bridge are afraid their study environment could be compromised with people drinking beer and wine.

In conclusion, if you're looking to grab a coffee at a simple coffee shop, that is not what you'll find at Starbucks. With this change, and I'm sure many more to come, Starbucks is transforming their image.
