Last Thursday a Gwinnett County mother left her three year old daughter home alone in order to go to a job interview. Ms. Alexander, the single-parent, claims that it was a vital meeting and she had no babysitter to look over her child. Police were called to the scene after neighbors called 911 reporting the daughter to be hystarically crying for her mother. When the Duluth police officers arrived they found the child dressed only in a skirt, no shoes or shirt. The officer made her something to eat and continued to look for her mom. When they located Ms. Alexander, she told the police that she had made it clear to her daughter she would be home soon. Police arrested and charged her fo reckless conduct that day, however she was released on Tuesday after posting $1,300 bond.
I am amazed by how careless and irresponsible parents can be. When a three year old child is left home alone, assumed by her mother that it was an acceptable parenting decision, I can only wonder how other children are being raised. This single-parent, Ms. Alexander, obviously was not prepared to have a child of her own if she could not even figure out a way to hire a baby sitter. Despite her somewhat responsible action of applying for a job, it was not more important than leaving her toddler by herself with all kinds of possible dangers that she could get into in the house. The mother was lucky to find her child alive when she got home considering the possible mistakes the young girl could have made such as picking up a sharp knife, or turning the bathtub on and drowning, or even electrocuting herself. Although they may seem impossible or unrealistic, a three year old child could get into all sorts of trouble. This immature mistake Ms. Alexander made by leaving her three year old daughter home alone could have resulted in a tragic loss, however the police have made it clear these actions were not good parenting and will not happen again.
