the article detailed a story about a thirty-one year old mother who left her three year old at home alone. completely alone. no instructions, no guidance. at first, i honestly did not think that that was a big deal. then i read the details. the neighbor was the one who figured out that something was wrong. she had been hearing the loud and pleading screams of the three year old for over an hour. the child had been crying out to for her mother. she was crying out for food. crying out for a bath. crying out for help. and no response. the neighbor called the police, and they came to see what was wrong. they opened the door and the little three year old girl came out. she was only wearing a little skirt. the police then found out that the mother left her daughter home alone so that she could go to a job interview. she was then arrested and the child was placed with a family friend.
as i pondered the article, i began to realize its significance.i began to think of all of the things that the little three year old girl could not do. it was not her fault that she could not feed herself and support herself. its not her fault. children aren't made to be able to support themselves. they are made to be reliant. it caused me to question. what kind of mother would leave her child? what kind of mother would not care enough about her child's safety? i have not come to any world changing conclusions about the depravity of human nature, but i have come to the conclusion that children need to be protected. they need to be defended. they cannot do things on their own, so it is adults job to support them and provide for them. children need to be nurtured and cared for. children need to be loved.people need to realize that children are the future, and the future needs to be protected.
