When you are called to the office, it’s always a little
scary. You think you might be in trouble? Or maybe you just did something
really awesome? Either way it’s a bit nerve racking. But being called to the
office of your athletic instructor is not scary at all. You are familiar with
the surroundings and it’s a much more informal environment. However, this
little girl should have been scared for her life.
A 10 year old girl in DeKalb County was sexually assaulted
by her martial arts instructor after being called to his office. This man, Adrian Spellen, is on trial for two
counts of rape and child molestation. How could a man be that cruel? She
trusted him and looked up to him as a role model. The actions of this man may
even ruin the girls desire to pursue martial arts and take away her ability to
trust again. Spellen is denying all the charges, but who is going to listen to
his word over a sweet, innocent 10 year old who wouldn’t even know what rape is
to be making the story up.
Students create a special relationship with their coach/instructor.
They put all their trust in them and let them teach and push them. This bond is
different than that of student and teacher at school because athletes become
much closer to their instructors. They are often with their instructors many
hours of the day and they rely on every word they say to improve. So much trust
is put in them. It breaks my heart to hear that that this bond was abused.
