Over the summer, a lot of talk about Chick-fil-a and their view on gay rights spread throughout Georgia because the food chain was founded and is heavily based here. Supporting gay rights has been an ongoing issue that is certainly discussed thoroughly in the current presidential debates, and fought over by several organizations that are either for or against it. The whole uproar put Chick-fil-a and their president, Dan T. Cathy, into the spotlight who has given money to organizations fighting same sex marriage in the past. The owners of the fast food chain are said to be deeply religious and support the biblical definition of the family unit which angered a few gay rights activists. Previous small protests have started and died down but in the summer of 2012, it was brought to attention yet again when the food chain donated food to a marriage seminar that was against homosexuality. Advocates, in Pennsylvania where the seminar occurred, started trying to get the chain removed from the campus and decided to stage a same-sex kiss-in on August 3rd and urged gays and lesbians to show up at the restaurants.
Supporting gay rights is a widely disputed issue in the
United States, and after this incident over the summer, it has been brought to
several people’s attention. Many are starting to look into the issue and
express their own opinions. There are also various states that either allow or
ban same sex marriage. This issue has been widely debated in the current presidential
election. Whether the president supports or does not support gay rights will
affect many people’s views on who to vote for. There are many people who feel
strongly towards same sex marriage and depending on the president’s views on
whether or not they support it, it will increase their number of followers. The
issue acts as one of the several determining factors in the 2012 presidential
election. Depending on which presidential candidate is elected, it will greatly
impact our nation’s economy, security, and basically everything else. It is
important that as a nation, we elect a leader that will bring us out of the
economic depression we are currently in, and lead our country to success.
