Family Fun Time: Shooting Up in the Car

Last Friday night, a mother from Acworth, Georgia, named Kelly Rhodes was arrested for possessing and injecting heroin. However, this was no ordinary drug bust because Rhodes was committing this crime right in front of her two children. Completely disregarding their safety and attention she indulged in her own selfish addiction, thankfully to be caught by the police shortly after. Along with possession, she was charged with driving on a suspended license and reckless conduct. My only question is why she wasn't charged with child neglect, when she was clearly neglecting her childrens' needs for a safe environment.
How any mother can expose her own children to dangerous drugs and the downward spiral of addiction is unbelievable to me. If she was never caught, the poor children would have to continue growing up in these circumstances and think of this as a regular lifestyle. The children would be more prone to addiction and drug abuse since it was embedded in their brains from a young age and endorsed by their parent. Even with her arrest, the children since have a long road ahead to them to learn healthy lifestyle choices.
This article relates to the project my group did on Truman Capote's In Cold Blood. The project uncovered the statistics and reasons behind why child abuse can poison the mind and lead to mental disabilities in adulthood. The protagonist Perry was neglected and abused when he was young and grew up to be a serial killer. The children in this article-- along with countless other children who grow up under unfortunate circumstances-- will have many internal obstacles to overcome later in life.
