Setting Your Priorities Straight

I attempted to start this blog earlier, but as is customary for me, I was distracted by lacrosse. I thought about working on it over the three day break, but my opportunity was thwarted, for I had a lacrosse tournament in North Carolina. On Friday, right after school, I hopped in the car with my mom and we began our four hour trip to Charlotte, North Carolina. When we got to the hotel I put my bags down, ate, and then passed out in the bed. The next morning I awoke to the usual sound of my alarm clock going off at 6:30 in the morning. I put on the appropriate lax attire and headed to the lobby level for my team breakfast. After breakfast, we were headed off to the fields for a solid day of lacrosse. When I arrived at the fields I was reunited with my other family, my lacrosse team. I was elated, for I had not seen them in weeks. We warmed up and then the horn sounded for our first game. We got demolished by the opposition, which I later realized would be theme for that day. We lost all three games that day. However, the next day we promised to come out harder and more focused. And that is exactly what we did, for we won our remaining two lacrosse games of that day. After our joyous day of winning, I was headed back home. I spent the majority of Monday relaxing and recuperating. I told myself that I would start my blog on Tuesday.

I woke up Tuesday morning and headed off to school. I faced a mediocre day at school and an easy run at cross country, so I was fairly content with my day. When I got home, I realized my chance to begin my blog would again be thwarted due to lacrosse. I had lacrosse practice that evening. I ascended my stair case, and yet again suited up in lax attire and headed to practice. After practice my coach handed everyone a packet with detailed workouts that we would have to do every night. By the time I got home I was too tired to begin my blog so I promised myself that I would start it on Wednesday.

Now it’s Wednesday and I find it quite comical, that my blog attempt has yet again been interrupted by lacrosse. I opened up a word document to begin to type my blog and realized that I had yet to do my WOD, workout of the day, which was included in my workout packet. Consequently, I stopped what I was doing and began my workout, which included squats, high knees, push-ups, and long-jumps.

Through these three failed attempts to begin my blog I have realized something important about myself. I have a passion for lacrosse. I already partially knew this, but I now recognize how much my devotion to lacrosse gets in the way of other things going on in my life. I learned that even though it’s great to have that one thing that you love and you should cherish it, you must stick to the rule of moderation. Everything is good in moderation, but once you cross that border into obsession, there is no return. You simply can’t but all your eggs in one basket; you must instead spread your eggs out across multiple baskets. I have now tasked myself with not spending all waking moments of my life on lacrosse, for it is not the only thing in life. I instead need to take a step back reevaluate, and split up my time accordingly between school and lacrosse. Therefore, I think that we should evaluate and reestablish our priorities occasionally, to make sure that we are on the path that we want to be on, which hopefully, is the path to success.
